Bothwell earns Acute Heart Attack Ready recertification from The Joint Commission

Bothwell Regional Health Center has been granted continued compliance of its Acute Heart Attack Ready (AHAR) certification from The Joint Commission, demonstrating its ability to quickly diagnose heart attacks, including the most severe type, ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). STEMI occurs when a major artery supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart is completely blocked.

Developed in collaboration with the American Heart Association, AHAR certification is awarded to hospitals with strong systems for quickly identifying and transferring heart attack patients. Bothwell was designated a Level III STEMI Center in March 2021 and plays a critical role in improving heart attack care and saving lives. Earning continued AHAR certification reflects the teamwork and dedication of Bothwell’s staff in providing high-quality, lifesaving treatment.

Michele Laas, RN, BSN, MSN, Bothwell’s chief nursing officer, said the recertification highlights the hospital’s commitment to high-quality emergency cardiac care.

“Every second matters when treating a heart attack, especially a STEMI, where immediate intervention is critical,” Laas said. “This recertification confirms that our processes and protocols ensure patients receive timely, evidence-based care before they are transferred to a facility with advanced cardiac capabilities.”

Bothwell’s emergency and cardiac teams work closely with emergency medical services and regional partners to provide seamless, life-saving care for heart attack patients. The hospital’s protocols ensure rapid diagnosis and transfer for specialized care.

In the event of someone showing signs of a heart attack, 911 should be contacted immediately. These signs can include pain or discomfort in the chest, arm or shoulder, shortness of breath, feeling lightheaded, nausea or vomiting, or jaw, neck or back pain.
