High Hopes Cancer Support Group Celebrates with Holiday Party

The High Hopes Cancer Support Group celebrated Christmas on Dec. 18 with a holiday party at the Susan O’Brien Fischer Cancer Center in Bothwell Regional Health Center.

Patients, along with their caregivers and loved ones filled the cancer center’s reception area with conversation and joy as they celebrated a holiday meal with several cancer center team members. The reception area was transformed with Christmas decorations for the celebration.

The meal included a ham provided by support group coordinator Cathy Harrison with various sides and rolls. The cancer center staff also made desserts. Maggie Borchers, a cancer center volunteer, performed holiday music during the party. Each patient also received a gift from Cancer Perks. A grant from the Bothwell Foundation helped to pay for the food and gifts.

“The holiday party for the support group is such a great way to celebrate with this group of wonderful people,” said Kara Sheeley, chief radiation oncologist and interim director of Oncology Services at the cancer center. “To watch how this group has grown both in numbers and in closeness is truly touching. Cathy works very hard to provide a fun, educational, supportive environment each month for our patients, and the party at the end of the year is a time to reflect and celebrate one another.”

The High Hopes Cancer Support Group meets monthly at the Susan O’Brien Fischer Cancer Center to help patients cope with their illness and live more effectively. For more information about the group and other services, contact the cancer center at 660.829.7792.
